Your First Visit
The first visit to our office takes approximately an 2-3 hours to complete.
During the visit you'll take part in an allergy and asthma consultation with one of our doctors. It's important to bring copies of medical records, x-rays and lab reports, as well as a complete list of anymedications you may be taking. You'll need your insurance card, copay, and a referral if oneisrequired by your insurance company. You'll also complete a comprehensive medical history because allergies and asthma are often inherited medical conditions. Your doctor will take time to gather important information about you, your medical history, and your family's medical history. A physical examination will follow. Your doctor will then review all results and determine the appropriate skin and / or breathing tests to be done at the second visit.
Note that allergic disease can be defined as an abnormal sensitivity to substances to which the body's immune system reacts. Your doctor can use skin tests to diagnose allergic disease. EMLA cream, a local anesthetic, can be applied to the skin one hour before skin testing to lessen any discomfort. EMLA cream can also be used at follow-up visits and when receiving allergy injections.
Please read all handouts you receive carefully. They are designed to help you understand the course of treatment. If you would like further information or have questions, feel free to ask the doctors or another staff member during your visit.
